Geesje Duursma, does her name ring a bell? You could know her as the owner of restaurant De Pleats. The rest of her resume regarding her passion for hospitality is just as impressive. However, hospitality is not the topic of Geesje’s talk. She will be discussing the condition of one of her sons: autism.
Besides her son about 189.999 people in the Netherlands also have an autism spectrum disorder. Many people with this condition have difficulty finding their place in society. Geesje believes that we should make sure that society understands them better. We should adjust their school and work environment, so they have the opportunity to be themselves, instead of them having to adjust to us.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxFryslân, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxFryslân event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized. This independent TEDx event is operated under license from TED.
